The raw cotton seed is first thoroughly cleaned of impurities such as stones, dust, metal fragments, lint, debris and foreign matter – which assure efficient processing and equipment protection. Where required, delinting and magnetic separation is used to remove the lint and metal contaminants.
To achieve higher oil production, seeds are cracked and dehulled to achieve the separation of kernels and the husks/hulls, which increase the proportion of oil and reduce fiber and hull contamination. This process not only enhances the yield of oil, but also generates hulls and lint – useful by products that can be used as animal feed or in other industries.
The de hulled kernels are cooked/conditioned (usually in steam-jacketed cookers) to regulate moisture and maximize oil extraction. This content is then flaked into fine, consistency pieces so as to increase the surface area to extract effectively.
Direct screw pressing could be utilized in fewer or less complex arrangements. However, in the case of high-capacity plants, we use a mixture of pre pressing and solvent extraction (food grade solvent). The resulting cake (or swelled flakes) is added into an extractor where the leftover oil is dissolved in a food-grade solvent. The obtained miscella (oil + solvent) is further separated and refined. The step guarantees almost complete oil recovery.
The oil (miscella) and the meal are evaporated with a vacuum-based evaporation and stripping system, with a recovery of the solvent up to 99% to be reused. The high-protein, solvent-free cotton seed meal is then toasted, cooled and packaged as a high-quality animal feed.
Crude cottonseed oil usually has impurities such as free fatty acids, phospholipids, gossypol, pigments, waxes – which are purified through a series of refining operations: degumming – neutralization – bleaching – deodorization. The outcome is high quality edible cotton seed oil that is within the food safety standards and is fit to be packaged.
