Why Is Groundnut Oil high in Demand?

Groundnut oil, also called as peanut oil, is one of the most consumed edible oils which possess high smoke point, a mild taste and long shelf life which makes it suitable in processed foods and for cooking and frying.

Additionally, its healthful property (rich in monounsaturated fats and Vitamin E) and industries (margarine, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals) reliance have played an important role in the gradual wider acceptance of its use in the global oil market. The establishment of a groundnut oil mill plant is thus a lucrative investment project in both the domestic and export markets.

What Is a Groundnut Oil Mill Plant?

A Groundnut Oil Mill Plant is a combined plant that transforms groundnuts into oil that can be consumed after undergoing several mechanical and chemical treatments. It has specially designed cleaning, decortication (de-shelling), flaking, cooking, pressing, filtration, and solvent extraction equipment. At Sudarshan Engineering Works, each turnkey Groundnut Oil Extraction Plant is designed to meet your capacity (5 TPD 500 TPD), raw materials available, and automation needs. We guarantee total optimization of the process – raw seed to processed refined oil.

Peanut (Groundnut) Oil Extraction: A Step by Step Process

The process of groundnut oil extraction is divided into several stages, and each stage is carefully controlled to guarantee that the produced oil is pure and of the best quality ever. The yield, flavor, and quality of the end product are significantly determined by each phase of the production process.

The explanation below describes the process of a Groundnut Oil Mill Plant in detail – starting with raw seed use and the production of refined edible oil.

  1. Seed Cleaning & Grading

The procedure starts with grading and cleaning of the raw groundnuts. As the peanuts that are harvested usually have foreign substances such as dust, stones, sticks, broken shells and metal pieces, cleaning is done to ensure the longevity of the machine and the quality of oil.

The seeds are then subjected to a vibrating screen cleaner to remove heavy impurities.

Then, a destoner will separate heavier stones and sand particles and a magnetic separator will remove metallic contaminants.

Once they are washed, the seeds are graded in accordance with size and quality with the help of the grader or separator, thus guaranteeing the homogeneity of the processing and increased efficiency of the Groundnut Oil Extraction Machinery.

After cleaning and grading the seeds, they are lifted and placed in buffer bins or silos until they are dehulled.

  1. Dehulling / Decortication

Groundnuts contain a thick outer layer (hull) which needs to be peeled off to get to kernels which hold oil.

During this process, the cleaned nuts are passed through a peanut decorticator which consists of a rotating drum or rubber roller which cracks the shell without breaking or bruising the kernels.

The air flow then separates the lighter shells and heavier kernels using a blower or aspirating system.

Correctly decorticated kernels yield:

  • Higher oil yield
  • Reduced wear on expellers
  • Less impurities in oil.

The shells that are no longer needed are gathered and utilized as boiler fuel, organic compost or animal bedding making sure there is no wastage in this phase.

  1. Conditioning & Flaking

Following the dehulling process, the kernels of groundnut are introduced to the extraction of oil in an efficient manner. This phase aims at making the oil-bearing cells soft and ruptured to enable oil to be released easily when pressed.

Flaking:

The kernels are processed through a seed flaking machine which includes two counter-rotating rolls through which the kernels are flattened into thin flakes (0.3-0.5 mm thick). This will enhance the surface area and disintegrate the oil cells, which enhance the extraction efficiency.

Conditioning:

The flaked material is then cooked in steam in a vertical or horizontal steam cooker. The cooking process modifies moisture (to approximately 810 percent) and temperature (7595 C), which makes the flakes soft and coagulates the proteins, and enables the oils to free-flow during pressing.

Conditioning is also good in increasing flavor stability, and reducing the formation of free fatty acids in the oil.

A steam boiler is used to provide the necessary steam, and a material conveyor is used to move the conditioned flakes to the Peanut Expeller part.

  1. Expelling (Mechanical Oil Extraction)

The most important part of the plant is the oil expeller, or screw press.

Conditioned groundnut flakes are passed in the expeller which is made of a rotating screw shaft that is confined in a perforated barrel. The screw, when turning, presses the material against the decreasing pitch, putting pressure on it gradually.

The oil is pushed out through the holes in the barrel and is collected in a trough beneath.

In the meantime, the solid residue (oil cake) is pushed out at the discharge end.

The Peanut Oil Expeller in Ludhiana or Groundnut Oil Press Machine usually eliminates 85-90 percent of the oil in the seeds. Later solvent extraction is used to recover the remaining oil in the cake.

The expelled crude oil is full of fine particles and gums, therefore, it is filtered through a screen or settling tank before filtration.

Benefits of Mechanical Expelling:

  • Easy and dependable functioning.
  • Minimal maintenance and energy usage.
  • Applicable in small to medium-sized mills.
  • Gives good quality crude oil with high retention of flavor.

The expeller plant is also equipped with gear reduction units, cooling and oil tanks to ensure smooth and safe operation.

  1. Crude Oil Storage and Filtration

The resulting crude oil after pressing still has suspended solids, moisture, and impurities. In contemporary systems, filters come with automatic pump feed, cake discharge system and safety valves to maintain the performance consistency.

The oil is filtered and then stored in mild steel or stainless-steel storage tanks that have:

  • Monitoring level sensors.
  • Temperature controls by steam coils.
  • Vents and drains for safety

At this point, the filtered crude oil may be sold directly (if it is of acceptable quality) or sent to the oil refining plant to be purified further.

  1. Solvent Extraction (Residual Oil Recovery)

The oil cake still contains approximately 58 percent oil even after mechanical expelling that can be extracted economically through solvent extraction plant.

Process Overview:

  1. The oil cake is well flaked and placed in a continuous solvent extractor, usually of the Rotocel or Loop type design.
  2. The extractor passes a food-grade solvent (typically hexane) through the material bed. The rest of the oil is dissolved by the solvent to produce a mixture known as miscella.
  3. The miscella is pumped through evaporators and strippers, and the solvent is extracted and condensed to be used again.
  4. Extracted oil (also referred to as the recovered crude oil) is refined.
  5. To eliminate the remaining hexane and moisture, the de-oiled meal (DOC) is toasted in a Desolventizer-Toaster (DT) and the product is cooled and stored to be consumed as cattle feed or protein supplement.

The benefits of Solvent Extraction:

  • Oil recovery is improved (up to 98-99%).
  • It reduces wastage and optimises resource utilization.
  • It provides additional products (DOC, fatty acids)
  • It lowers production costs in mega-size plants.

  1. Refining

The crude oil that has been expelled or solvent extracted is dirty and contains free fatty acids along with phospholipids (gums), waxes, pigments and odor-producing compounds. The oil is refined through a multi-stage refining process so as to make it edible.

Stages of Oil Refining:

  • Degumming: Each of the phospholipids is removed by water or acid treatment.
  • Neutralization: Removes the free fatty acid by reacting it with either caustic soda (chemical refining) or by distillation (physical refining).
  • Bleaching: The oil is combined with activated bleaching earth or carbon in order to absorb the color pigments and oxidation products.
  • Deodorization: Steam is subjected to vacuum to eliminate volatile odors, and enhance shelf life.

The resulting product is pure light-colored, neutral-smelling groundnut oil that can be bottled or can be put on sale in the edible oil market.

The step of groundnut oil refining is performed in stainless-steel reactor which is provided with the heat exchangers, agitators, and vacuum pumps to stabilize the required process parameters.

By-products and Their Uses
  • Groundnut shell may be used to produce briquettes or fed into the boiler as fuel.
  • Soap stock / fatty acid distillates are used in the biofuel, detergent, and soap industries.
  • De-oiled cake (DOC) is highly nutritious which is used as a poultry and cattle feed.
  • Bleaching spent earth, which may be turned into compost or fuel briquettes.

All the by-products will add extra revenue to your Groundnut/Peanut Oil Manufacturing Plant., making your operation profitable.
