Solvent Extraction Plant

OIL EXPELLERS

Solvent Extraction Plant

Mechanical expelling is usually followed by the extraction of oil, which is often trapped in the oil cake. The amount of oil trapped varies from 6% to 8%. If this cannot be used as a resource, modern processors opt for Solvent Extraction, a scientifically engineered process that leads to the efficient extraction of the remaining oil and the utilization of every seed to the fullest.

At Sudarshan Engineering Works, we design and supply complete Solvent Extraction Plants that deliver maximum yield, minimal solvent loss, and consistent product quality. Built on decades of process innovation and practical industry experience, our plants are tailored for soybean, sunflower, cottonseed, rice bran, palm kernel, mustard, and other oil-bearing materials.

What Is Solvent Extraction?

Solvent extraction is the extraction of oil and fat from material by means of a solvent in the process of oil and fat recovery. The extraction technique utilizes hexane, a solvent that is considered safe for food use, to dissolve and extract the fats and oils that are still present in the oil cake and the rice bran after the mechanical expelling process. Subsequently, the solvent-oil solution (generally referred to as miscella) is separated by the processes of evaporation and distillation, and the solvent is then recovered and reused within a closed-loop system.

This method guarantees:

  • Up to 99% oil recovery
  • Low energy consumption
  • Uniform extraction quality

• High-protein de-oiled meal suitable for animal feed

1. Preparation of Raw Material (Oil Cake / Bran)

The process begins with the oil cakes that are already obtained from expeller units, or it can also start directly with rice bran and other high-oil materials.

The preparation stage involves:

  • Flaking and grinding to increase surface area
  • Pre-heating for uniform extraction
  • Moisture adjustment to reach optimum solvent penetration
2. Extraction Stage

The material that has been prepared is put into a continuous extractor (Rotocel / Loop / Belt type) for processing.

At this stage, the Hexane solvent goes through the material bed, which yields the oil and creates a liquid mixture called miscella.

The stage is engineered for the greatest contact and percolation efficiency, which will result in the almost total extraction of the remaining oil.

3. Desolventization-Toasting (DT)

The de-oiled cake that has gone through the process contains small amounts of solvent and heads to the Desolventizer-Toaster.

Steam is used to vaporize the solvent while, at the same time, the meal is made more flavorful and safe for animal consumption through gentle toasting.

4. Distillation & Solvent Recovery

Heated miscella in evaporators and distillation columns helps in the solvent separation from crude oil.

The solvent that has been recovered is turned into a liquid and sent back to the extractor, thus guaranteeing high efficiency and the lowest solvent loss.

5. Meal Cooling & Finishing
  • The desolventized meal is then cooled, dried, and taken to storage.

The meal has now lost all the solvent and is protein-rich, ready for either livestock feeding or value addition.

Main Components of a Solvent Extraction Plant

  • Extractor (Rotocel / Loop Type) – Allows for efficient oil extraction in multiple stages.
  • Desolventizer-Toaster (DT / DTDC) – Solvent is removed and the meal conditioned.
  • Evaporator System – Oil and solvent are separated.
  • Distillation Column & Condenser – Solvent is recovered for reuse.
  • Solvent Recovery Unit – A closed-loop design that ensures minimum loss.
  • Meal Cooling & Bagging Section – The last step in processing, followed by storage.

Features & Advantages

  • Recovery of oil from oil cakes and bran up to 99%
  • Running costs are low due to closed-loop solvent recovery
  • Operation is safe and explosion-proof with vapor control
